THE STORY
I wrote Something That I Need to Know after a trip to Boston in January of 2015. My best friend and I were going up to visit a couple other friends of ours, one of whom I had begun to develop a romantic interest in.
Over the course of the weekend, it became increasingly clear that there was something strong between us and we were a great match. But she was living in Boston and I was living in NYC, we both recently had bad relationship experiences, and we had concerns about how it would impact all of our mutual friendships if things didn't work out. I wrote this song about facing my fears and weighing these concerns before diving in to this relationship.
I feel like this is something anyone who has ever been in a relationship can relate to. Whatever the circumstances, there's always some level of apprehension and uncertainty we feel before deciding to jump into something new. You're opening yourself up to vulnerability and that can be scary, no matter how strongly you feel about the person. I think this song encapsulates that dichotomy of being cautious yet knowing how badly you want something.
This time of year always reminds me of that weekend and I've wanted to put this one out as a winter song for years. Well, I finally pulled the trigger and I'm glad I did. I really like how it turned out (thanks largely to my wonderful friend and producer Joseph Daniel). Hope you enjoy it!
P.S. if you want to find out how this all turned out, make sure to check out the annotated lyrics below...
